HEROES AND VILLIANS
Welcome to the world of the Helicopter Quartet, following on from our previous post on Giant David, he and Helicopter QT arose from the ashes from the same band....
Helicopter are - Chrissie Caulfield who plays Violin/Synth, and on Guitar- Michael Capstick. This time, they combine to make something that has less of the illustrative approach of catscans - where they wanted to take you to other places - this time it`s spaces that they now wish to create. Heroes & Villians has a sparse cinematic quality to it - I can imagine listening to this in the middle of a busy city street or in a completely natural setting with an open space, indeed, upon further listening it is clear that they make music purely for one`s imagination.
"Heroes.." is warm and yet eerie at the same time, the song`s two motifs, a strum from Michael and the short cascade of notes from Chrissie are simple but extremely effective, and performed at just the right time - the signs of two composers who have developed an awareness of textures .. and of tension - an emotion which resonates throughout their work to varying degrees.
Chrissie is working not only the violin but also a decent sized pedal board simultaneously , fusing her love of the classical with her inquisitiveness for technology. You`ll be able to see this live when they play 11th and 15th September - the latter with their ex bandmate Giant David. Get the deatils from their facebook page.
The Self titled EP , from which "Heroes & Villians" is lifted from, is available on a pay nothing/pay-what-you-like basis, and it`s here down below. Also included are the two of them together as Catscans, this is the last recording before the group`s split early this year. The band (as well as Chrissie as a solo artist) also feature on our forthcoming remix album "Circus Freaks and Processed Beats" where track 1 gets a circus makeover.. coming soon....
